Library to ‘transport youth back in history’ ‘Opportunity Bus’ to travel to Ohio History Center Museum Bossard Library will once again host an “Opportunity Bus” trip on Saturday, August 9, as it travels to the Ohio History Center in Columbus, Ohio, and “transports youth back in history.” The “opportunity bus,” made possible through an America 250-Ohio Commission Grant, will provide registered students (grades kindergarten through 12) with an accompanying adult, as well as community members the chance to tour the history center at no charge. Lunch will also be provided. While registration is currently full for this event, interested patrons are encouraged to register for the waiting list. The Ohio History Center, located in Columbus, Ohio, is the headquarters of the Ohio History Connection (formerly the Ohio Historical Society). The center showcases a museum of the history of Ohio through extensive exhibits highlighting the state’s past. During the trip, participants will be encouraged to complete a “museum scavenger hunt” as they learn about Ohio’s history, including its prehistory, during the tour. For those unable to visit the Ohio History Center on the “Opportunity Bus,” details regarding how to obtain a free admission to the center will be announced at a later date. In April 2024, the library hosted its inaugural “Opportunity Bus” trip and visited the Titanic exhibit at the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus. For the latest information on the library’s upcoming programs, please visit bossardlibrary.org or follow the library on Facebook. “Transporting Youth Back in History” is funded in part by the America 250-Ohio Commission. Civil War Book Club to discuss Sherman The Civil War Book Club will return in August to discuss Fierce Patriot: The Tangled Lives of William Tecumseh Sherman by American historian Robert L. O’Connell. The meeting will be held beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 16 and is open to anyone with an interest in the history of the Civil War era. In Fierce Patriot, O’Connell discusses the life of America’s first “celebrity” Union Army General, who, after his capture of Atlanta in 1864, marched to Savannah utilizing a “scorched earth” policy. In the north, he was hailed a brilliant military strategist, and, in the south, the general was seen by many as a force of destruction. In this work, O’Connell sheds new light on this complicated figure who is seen by many as the quintessential soldier/statesman of the nineteenth century. Copies of the book are available for checkout at Bossard Library. Digital copies can be found on hoopla or through the Ohio Digital Library via the Libby app. The Civil War Book Club is moderated by Gene Huffman of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Cadot Blessing Camp No. 126.
